Is it too late to learn martial arts?

Lucy D asked:

I’ve always sort of wanted to learn martial arts, but now I suddenly REALLY want to learn. The problem is, I’m 14, and I know most people start when they’re really young. So I want to know, is it too late for me to start learning martial arts? I’m not planning on getting really good, like a professional or anything, I just want to know some moves.

absolutely not. some UFC fighters started when they were 20+ years old and they still kick a**!

14 is a perfect age to start, You are mature enough to have a genuine interest in the things you will be taught. You can intellectualize the concepts being taught and should be able to learn very quickly. Martial Arts can be studied throughout your entire life, age 7 to age 95 +. Try to find a school that will let you watch a class or some classes with out charging you. Watching will help to give you and idea of what kind of person the instructor is. Look for someone that really cares about each individual student. Gets respect from and gives respect to the members of the class. Is humble and lets the students asks questions. Also the instructor should be able to make the class fun. Be careful of hidden fees for anything and everything. You are paying to learn and it should be fun for you. Enjoy your classes because as I said before you can train in martial arts your whole life. It is a wonderful form of whole body physical fitness with many benefits. Self Defense being one.

No, I started at 15. Its actually better if you start around this age as you can appreciate the art more and train harder.

You are not too old to do anything you put your mind and effort into. I started when I was 15.

Maybe think about it this way. If you train hard every day for 1 week, (just for example’s sake), you’ve already trained 7 days. Now consider someone who started when they were 9, but only trains once a week. In one week you’ve already caught up and probably exceeded the skills of that kid’s 2 months worth of “effort”.

Martial arts is for you, not anyone else. It doesn’t matter if your 14 or 92. Have at it!
